How To | Space Themed Birthday

Space Theme party, Kid Space Party, Rocket Party, Space Birthday Party

My Space loving son recently turned the big 6. Of course the party had to have a Space theme. If you have been following along on my blog over the past year then you’ve seen the birthday theme parties I did for my other two kids this year. If you want to check out my other parties click here and here. Because his birthday always falls on or around Labor Day it seems I am always very rushed trying to make his cake and attend to all the other party stuff, plus get all the back-to-school stuff ready to go. You know what I learned though? Kids will love any sort of hoopla you do for them, it doesn’t have to be the perfect looking party ready to be pinned all over Pinterest. He didn’t measure what I did for him item for item against what I did for everyone else, thank goodness, ’cause I felt I fell a little short on the grand reveal for his birthday party. I didn’t get great pictures of everything, but I will list things out in detail so you can plan and purchase all the space related items I used for the party. Again, I am focused on a fun party for very little cost! Continue reading How To | Space Themed Birthday

How To | Solar System Mobile

Solar System Kid Craft, Solar System Mobile

Anyone else have a Space lover in their house? I talked earlier this summer about the great book we found called 13 Planets: The Latest View of the Solar System by David Aguilar. My son is still loving this book and it inspired us to create a planet mobile together. I found this great kit at a Michaels store that had all the Styrofoam balls in it and also included the ring for Saturn. I used this kit as a great start for making our mobile. How To | Space Shuttle Party Treat

Space Party Favor, Rocket Treat, Space Birthday, Rocket BIrthday

My son is in love with all things Space. For his birthday he wanted to take a Space themed treat to school to celebrate. I came up with an idea to create the Space Shuttle out of Lifesavers and Hershey’s Kisses. For me this was better than baking cupcakes! It probably was better for the teacher too, who didn’t have to help a class of Kindergarteners unwrap their cupcakes and then clean up the frosting mess afterward. 12 Days of Christmas Ornament Swap

I was hoping to get these posted for a Christmas in July theme, but I guess Christmas in August will do too. I recently hosted a 12 Days of Christmas Ornament Swap and I was blown away by the beautiful ornaments every one created. Take a look for yourself!

How To | Mei Tai Baby Carrier

If you read my summer day camp post last week I mentioned this upcoming post about baby carriers. I recently sewed myself a Mei Tai carrier and I love it. When my kids were babies I used the Baby Bjorn and I loved that thing, but my babies were all on the big side and it seemed too quickly they got to the point where I couldn’t stuff their chubbies into that carrier anymore. My youngest one she is a zinger, she makes me want to purchase one of those leashes and hook her to it just so I can keep her in my sight. I decided a bigger baby carrier might be one solution. We have lots of times when we forget to or can’t fit the stroller in the car and we end up some place where I need to carry her. Other times we have our double-stroller, but if there is a lot of walking then the 5 yr. old and 3 yr. old like to ride in it, this cloth carrier gives me a lot more options for getting everyone to where we need to go. Summer Day Camp | Painted Sand Art

Kids Summer Crafts

Week #6 of our Summer Day Camp series is here! My friend Sarah from LimeMade made a cute project with her kids that you will want to try. I should have done this while we were camping, we had plenty of sand available! So visit Sarah here to find the complete instructions for making your own painted sand art picture.

This will be our last week of Summer Day Camp for this summer. But I have lots of Fall and Halloween ideas coming up and I will be posting about my son’s upcoming space themed birthday party. My kids will be heading back-to-school soon, making me a little (ok, probably a lot) teary eyed. I will have two in school this year! Seems like a big step to only have 2 left at home with me.

Check back next week when I show you the Mei Tai baby carrier I made. If you can sew you can make your own and save yourself the $100 it costs to buy one.

See you next week!

Summer Day Camp | Recycled Robots

Kids Summer CraftsThe Summer Day Camp craft for week five is Recycled Robots. We made these robots while we were camping and they were a huge hit with all the kids. After the robots were finished, (we even had round #2 of robot making on a different afternoon) the kids had a robot show where everyone got up and showed their robot and told its name and other things it could do. Each presenter was given a unique medal for their robot. Some examples are: coolest robot, best in show, most unique, and funniest robot. Making robots is a lot of creative fun and full of laughs as you see what everyone comes up with!

Supplies:

  • Recycled containers, caps, twist ties, etc. of all sizes
  • Hot glue gun
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Large googly eyes
  • Platinum or silver spray paint

How To:

  1. Lay out all your cleaned recycled containers for everyone to see.
  2. Grab interesting pieces to put together.
  3. Use hot glue to attach pieces to each other. (Adult help is needed!)
  4. Spray paint robot.
  5. Add googly eyes using hot glue.
  6. Let dry.

Summer Day Camp | Thumbprint Pendant

I know you’ve been anxiously awaiting the summer camp project for week four. I’ve been a little behind in my posting because we took a family camping vacation. We made some awesome memories and my kids were seriously sobbing when we got home because they were so sad about the end of our camping fun.

Our project this week is by Katie from Katie’s Nesting Spot. It is an Ed Emberley inspired pendent using a fingerprint. I love this! So easy and fun for kids and a perfect camping project. Hop over to her site Katie’s Nesting Spot for the full instructions for making your own pendant!

Summer Day Camp | Friendship Pins

Friendship Pins, Kid Craft, Summer Kid Craft, Easy Kid Craft

If you are as many years young as I am you may remember making friendship pins in grade school. I remember I would pin them on my shoelaces down near the bottom row so I would always have them on without having to remove them everyday from my shirt. Oh to be as cool now ;)

I thought I would revive this easy craft for a summer day camp project. I found these awesome coil-less pins at Jo-Anns. Did they make these pins way back when? My kids had fun making the pins and then giving them out to friends and trading them too. This is a fun activity and requires few supplies!

Supplies:

  • Coiless Safety Pin (by Darice)
  • Assortment of Beads (make sure holes are big enough to slide on pin)

How To:

  1. This really couldn’t be easier. Slide beads on pin.
  2. Trade finished pins with friends and wear.
