Jewelry is a staple in any girl’s wardrobe, am I right? Of course I am. So making jewelry to give as a gift is the perfect handmade gift idea. I made these pearl ribbon necklaces to give out at a gift exchange. Mix up the colors a bit and they would be a fun Valentine’s Day necklace!

DIY Ribbon Necklace Gray

If you aren’t familiar with jewelry making and working with wire, check out this link for a how to on making a simple wire loop.

Supplies:

  • Pearl Beads
  • Satin Ribbon
  • Jump Rings
  • Clasp
  • Chain
  • Eye Pins (has looped already formed on one end)
  • Metal Ribbon Clasps
  • Crocheted Flowers
  • Gemstone or Pearl
  • E6000
  • Wire Cutter
  • Round Nose Pliers
  • Flat Pliers

How To:

  1. Start your necklace by joining the pearls together with wire loops. You can find a great tutorial here.
  2. Cut two pieces of ribbon, mine are each 5 1/2″ long. Using a pliers, add the metal ribbon clasps to each end of the ribbons.
  3. Using jump rings, attach your joined pearls to the metal ribbon clasps.
  4. On the end of the ribbons attach a clasp to one side and a jump ring and short length of chain on the other side.
  5. Use E6000 glue to adhere the crocheted flowers and pearl to your necklace. Let dry.

DIY Garland

I love the way this scalloped paper garland looks! This garland is so easy to create. I have seen lots of cute ones made from fabric, but that seemed like a lot of work to me. I came up with this easy idea to make one from patterned scrapbooking paper so it would look very similar to fabric. This garland is the perfect party accessories, it makes any room look festive when it is hung across the wall. This banner is so versatile you could use it for a birthday party, a baby shower or even a wedding shower! It would be cute with some paper letters attached to spell out the occasion.

How To | Paper Party Garland

Supplies:

  • 12×12 Patterned Paper
  • Bias Tape
  • Scalloped Edged Scissors
  • Glue
  • Large Bowl or Circle (for tracing)

How To:

  1. With a piece of patterned paper laid out, trace a large circle onto it. You can trace around the edge of a large bowl (that is what I did) or cut out a 12″ diameter circle template from a piece of paper.
  2. Cut out the large circle from your patterned paper and cut the circle in half.
  3. Repeat steps 1. and 2. until you have the desired amount of scallops.
  4. Use your scalloped edge scissors and trim along the curved edge of each scallop.
  5. Lay out your bias tape. Open up the edges of the bias tape and slide the straight edge of the paper scallop inside. Glue each scallop to the bias tape by adding glue along the top of the straight paper edge. Let dry.
  6. Hang your garland on the wall and get the party started!

The end of the school year is right around the corner. I have been thinking about what to make for L’s teacher. I decided some handmade fabric flowers would be nice. I decided to do them in a neutral color scheme, I know she wears a lot of black. I found the popular stretchy style headband at the Dollar Tree in a pack of 6 for $1. When I made the fabric flowers I put a hair clip and a pin on the back. I figure she can wear it in her hair by attaching it to the headband or using the hair clip. She can also use the pin to put it on a hat, her shirt or even a purse.

I have detailed instructions for making these flowers on a previous post. You can find the instructions here and more here. When I made the flowers in the instruction post I used a satin fabric and made the flowers look a little more loose and I sewed pearls in the center. For the flowers above I used a cotton, quilting type of fabric and wrapped the fabric a little tighter. I also rolled the center instead of tying a knot, which gave the flowers a little bit of a different look. The fabric I used is by Riley Blake Designs and it has glitter already on the fabric, which gave these flowers a pretty shine when they were finished.

I think any teacher would love to receive a handmade gift like this. What are you making for teacher gifts? I would love to hear about it, leave a comment below.

Beautiful aren’t they? So easy to make too! You only need three supplies to make these stunning bobby pins. My daughter wore some in her hair today to school and they looked really cute. Girls of all ages will love keeping their hair in place with these! These would make great handmade gifts for  bridesmaids, birthday party favors or a gift for your sister.

I previously posted these instructions in with my Valentine Printable, so this is a little redundant. I thought these pretty pictures might inspire some of you to make just the bobby pins even if you don’t need to create Valentine cards.

How To | Cabochon Bobby Pins

Supplies:

  • Bobby Pins with Pad (mine are from here)
  • Cabochon Flowers (mine are Martha Stewart from Jo-Anns)
  • E6000 Glue

How To:

  1. Put glue (E6000) on the bobby pin pad.
  2. Add flower or cabochon. (The Martha Stewart ones I used have a foam sticker on the back. I peeled the foam off and then had a flat surface left for gluing.)
  3. Let dry.

Hand wind Music Box in Wooden Box

Here is something you can make your little sweetheart for Valentine’s Day, a hand-crank music box placed inside a cute hand-painted wooden box. When my daughter (now 6) was a baby I always sang her “You Are My Sunshine” while I rocked her to sleep. My daughter and I still love to sing this song together. (Have you heard this version by Elizabeth Mitchell?) Below are the instructions for creating your own wooden music box.

(I also wanted to mention that this would be a beautiful way to present an engagement ring.)

How To | My Sunshine Music Box

Supplies:

  • Hand Crank Music Box (I found mine here.)
  • Wooden Box ($1 at Michaels Craft Stores)
  • Paint Stirrer Stick
  • Acrylic Paint in White, Light Blue and Yellow
  • Acrylic Paint Gloss Sealer (comes in same size bottle as the acrylic paint)
  • Paint Brush
  • Small Craft Sponge
  • Black Stamping Ink Pad
  • Small Alphabet Letter Stamps
  • 4 Small Screws
  • Wood Glue
  • Dremel Tool
  • Saw
  • Sand Paper

How To:

  1. My music box needed to be attached to a piece of wood and glued into the bottom of the wooden box. I found a paint stick was the perfect width. I had my husband cut the paint stick to the correct length. Then he screwed the music box to the paint stick.
  2. Next my husband marked where he needed to cut a notch and hole for the music box crank arm to slide down into. He used a dremel tool to cut the opening.
  3. You will want to paint and embellish your box next and wait until last to glue your music box inside.
  4. Before painting your box, sand lightly with sand paper. (I didn’t do this and should have in hindsight…)
  5. Paint the outside of the box with blue acrylic paint. Let dry.
  6. To create the clouds, lightly dip the corner of a sponge in white paint. Dab in a circular motion creating cloud shapes all around the box. Let dry.
  7. Paint the heart on the top yellow. Let dry.
  8. Use your alphabet stamps to add “my sunshine” on top of the yellow heart. Let dry.
  9. Paint over entire box with the acrylic sealer. Let dry.
  10. Adhere your paint stick with attached music box to the bottom of your painted box using wood glue.

DIY Brides Hairpiece

If you are on a wedding budget you can easily make this hairpiece for yourself.

Stunning couple aren’t they! My brother got married two weeks ago, it was a beautiful ceremony and a gorgeous Fall day outside. My husband and I and my son Charlie were in the wedding party. Whew, it was a lot of work to get our whole family looking spiffy for the wedding. I was lucky enough to be able to make the bride’s hairpiece for her big day. I loved the way it turned out and was so pleased with the way it looked in her hair when I saw it that morning!

How To | Bridal Fabric Rose Hair Clip

Supplies:

  • 2- 2″x 30″  White Satin Fabric Strips
  • Hot Glue or Needle and Thread
  • Pearl Beads
  • Leaf Sprig – Search for Millinery Leaf White
  • White Feathers – Mine were from the Creatology line at Michaels
  • White Craft Felt
  • Craft Glue
  • Scissors
  • Hairclip

How To:

  1. To create your fabric flowers visit this link for detailed instructions: How To | Fabric Flowers  I made one fabric flower slightly larger than the other for a variation in size.
  2. Position your fabric flowers side by side and then glue or sew your leaf spring and feather on the back side of the fabric roses. (Pic. 1)
  3. Cut a piece of white felt in the shape of the fabric flowers. Use craft glue to glue the felt to the back of the flowers. The felt will hold all the pieces together. Let dry.
  4. Cut a small strip of felt and glue it over the bottom of the hair clip. Let dry. (Pic. 2)
  5. To add an extra touch to the hairpiece buy a piece of veil netting. The netting is sold packaged at Michaels in the wedding aisle. You can attach the netting to your hair with bobby pins.

Flower Girl Headband with Fabric Flowers

This fabric flower headband is perfect for a Flower Girl. All it takes is some strips of fabric and hot glue or thread to put it together.

How To | Flower Girl Headband with Fabric Flowers and Tulle

Supplies:

  • 2″ x 30″  Fabric Strips
  • Hot Glue or Needle and Thread
  • Pearl Beads
  • Tulle
  • Headband
  • E6000
  • Scissors
  • Clothes Pin

How To:

  1. Tie one end of the fabric strip into a loose knot. Use the knot as the flower’s center. (Pic. 1)
  2. Wrap the fabric strip around the knot in a spiral shape. To create more depth to the fabric you can twist the fabric at the same time. (Pic. 2 and 3)
  3. To hold the fabric in place you can either add dabs of hot glue as you wrap (I found this to be messy and to cause lots of glue strings) or tack the layers together with thread. As you build the outer layers of the spiral continue to tack together with thread or hot glue. (Pic. 4)
  4. When you are finished creating the spiral flower shape,  tuck the end of the fabric strip into the back of the flower. It’s okay if the back of your flowers look messy. (Pic. 5)
  5. Sew beads onto the center of your flowers. Add a piece of tulle by sewing it to the back of one of the flowers. (Pic. 6)
  6. Add a generous amount of E6000 glue to the headband where you want the flower. (I covered up the metal flower on the headband by placing one of the fabric flowers directly on top of it.) Use a clothes pin or two to hold the flower in place while it dries. Repeat for the second flower. (Pic. 7)

Feather Fascnitor Hair piece for wedding

My little brother is getting married this October! It has been quite a year for him (and his fiancé). He was diagnosed with Cushing’s Syndrome last Winter, which was caused by a tumor growing in his lungs, i.e. a rare form of lung cancer. The first half of this year has been spent in surgery, recovery, and chemo. We are all looking forward to the wedding and I have been working on some hair pieces for the bridesmaids (including myself). I am feeling fortunate to be included in their special day.

I am sure many of you would love to create your own beautiful feather hair accessories for your wedding without spending too much money. Here is a tutorial for you to follow. It really isn’t hard or expensive!

How To | Bridesmaid Feather Fascinator

Supplies:

How To:

  1. The Botanic Artistry Feather Spray has 5 feather groupings on it. Use your wire cutter and cut off one group of feathers (Pic. 1). Unwrap the brown tape from around the bottom of the feathers, so that the feathers are loose and can be separated.
  2. Choose two similar looking peacock feathers. Use your wire cutter and cut off the top part (the eye) of the feather (Pic. 2). Pull off a lot of the wispy feathers from along the sides of the feather stem.
  3. Layer the two peacock feathers behind the dark gold feathers from the feather group. Once you have your feathers all arranged how you want them, use the jewelry wire and wrap it a couple times around the feather stems (Pic. 3). Leave a long tail of wire to use for attaching the feathers to the hair clip.
  4. Use your wire cutter and trim the end of the feather stems so they are all even and end just below the wire wrap.
  5. Position your hair clip underneath the feathers (Pic. 4). Use the tail of wire on the feathers and wrap it around the top prongs of the hair clip. Trim off any extra wire.
  6. Use your wire cutter to clip off the shank on the rhinestone button. Glue the rhinestone button to the hair clip by adding a generous amount of E6000 glue to the base of the feather hair clip. Be careful that no glue drips onto the hinge of the clip or the other side. When you have the button placed, clip the hairpiece to a piece of wax paper and let it dry (Pic. 5).
