Do you remember being a young child? Spending the day digging in the dirt and finding treasures in the yard? The older I get the more my memories of those moments slip away, but I am able to see those same sort of moments being experienced by my children.
We are having a sort of Indian Summer here in our neck of the woods. Thankfully the boys got to play outside for a long time yesterday while Steve worked in the garage. The two of them were digging in the gravel of our driveway for over a half-an-hour. Later Allan told me they made a castle, it even had a stick stuck in the middle. Basically it was a big mound of dirt decorated with leaves. Oh so simple, but yet so fun for them.
At lunchtime Allan would not come in the house, so I made him a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and took it outside for him to eat. About ten minutes later I see him making his way to the porch and it was a funny site. See what he is holding on the left? That is his sandwich. At first I thought it was some sort of dead animal or who knows what else he may have found outside. Nope, he eats out the middle of the sandwich and leaves the crust, ending up with a long funny looking piece. On the right he is holding a container where his new friend the caterpillar lives. Allan has named him Brown Socks Black Socks. Can you guess why?
After lunch Allan insisted we do a photo shoot of the caterpillar. The caterpillar on a piece of wood (one of Allan’s found treasures), on a weed, on a vine and so on. It was quite comical, but I was focusing the shots on Allan and the caterpillar, not just the caterpillar. He also came in the house afterward and did a series of drawings of Brown Socks Black Socks and his parents and siblings. These drawings will be going in his handmade art binder.
So for now Brown Socks Black Socks is living in a yogurt container full of leaves and grass in our garage. He is Allan’s newest and now dearest buddy.
