How To | Dinosaur Birthday Cake

Dinosaur Birthday Cake

Are you looking for a dinosaur birthday cake to make for your dinosaur lover? This triceratops cake is easy and uses ingredients you probably already have in your cupboard. I made this for my son’s 4th birthday and when he saw it he was super excited. I also have a coordinating dinosaur party pack available for purchase in my store. (I have no cake frosting skills, so if you make this cake and can actually frost it smoothly, I would love to post a picture of your cake!)

How To | Dinosaur Cake

Supplies:

  • 2 – 9 inch Circular Cake Pans
  • Cake Mix
  • Frosting
  • Green Food Coloring
  • 2 Bananas (horns)
  • Marshmallows (spikes/bone)
  • Red Fruit Roll-up (tongue)
  • M&M or Raisin (eye)
  • Toothpicks
  • Large Cutting Board
  • Tinfoil
  • Knife

How To:

  1. Download, print and cut out the Triceratops Cake Template (found in my Store).
  2. Bake 2 – 9 inch cakes, release from pans when cooled and cut off top of cakes so they are flat.
  3. Place paper templates onto cakes and use a sharp knife to cut out triceratops cake shapes.
  4. Cover cutting board in tinfoil. Arrange cake shapes on board to form triceratops head.
  5. Color frosting green using green food coloring.
  6. Frost cake.
  7. Cut tongue shape from Fruit Roll-up, place tongue onto frosted cake.
  8. Add marshmallow with raisin or M&M for the eye, a dab of frosting can hold the pupil in place.
  9. Slice a marshmallow and cut slices into 5 triangular shapes to form bone pieces on the edge of the triceratop’s frill. Place slices along points of frill.
  10. Create the horns by cutting one banana in half. Place toothpicks on the cake where each of the horns will be placed. Slide each banana half onto a toothpick to hold it in place. The nose horn can be created by cutting a smaller piece off of the second banana and using a toothpick to hold it in place. (Note: if preparing the cake the day before, wait to add the bananas because they will turn brown.)

Find the Triceratops Cake Template in my Store for only $1.99. It is a multiple page .pdf that includes instructions and the templates for the cake shapes you need to create the triceratops head.
