We made these cute shirts using fabric paint and paper stencils. My kids love to wear things they have made. Charlie loves his car shirt, which he had painted on previously. He decided he wanted a car shape put on top of the original paint. Lorelei is in love with bunnies and birds, hence the bunny and bird with hearts! Poor Allan’s shirt didn’t turn out, the paint colors we used barely showed up on the dark blue shirt. Keep that in mind when you are creating your shirt, a lighter color shirt will take the paint better and your design will show up more clearly.

How To | Fabric Spray Paint T-shirt

Supplies:

• T-shirt
• Paper
• Scissors
• Double-Sided Tape
• Fabric Spray Paint (I used the Jo-Ann’s Kids Camp Fabric Spray or use the recipe for making your own below.)
• Cardboard
• Old Shoes and clothes to wear while painting!

How To:

1. Wash your shirt and let it dry.
2. Slip a piece of cardboard between the layers of your shirt. This prevents that paint from leaking through to the back side of your shirt.
3. Find clip art or draw your own design on a piece of paper (which is what I tried to convince my kids to do). Cut out your design and and use double-sided tape to adhere your art to your shirt.
4. Put on your old clothes and shoes. The wind can really blow this paint around and all over what you are wearing!
5. Spray fabric paint on your shirt and all around your paper stencil. Let dry. Remove paper stencils and admire your shirt!

This recipe is from Family Fun magazine June/July 2011 – “In a spray bottle, mix three parts fabric paint to two parts warm water and shake. Spray the paint onto the fabric all around the cutout.”
